Grupo Capoeira Brasil is an international cultural organization, dedicated to the preservation and evolution of the art of Capoeira. Founded in 1989 in Rio de Janeiro, the group has contributed immensely to the worldwide growth of Capoeira, introducing the art to millions of people. Capoeira Brasil, with schools in over 25 countries spanning six continents, is an ambassador of Brazilian culture and an innovator in the art of Capoeira.

Founded by Luis Roberto Simas, Paulo César da Silva Sousa, and Paulão Sales Neto known in the capoeira community by their nome de guerra: Mestre Boneco, Mestre Paulinho Sabiá, and Mestre Paulão Ceará, respectively. All three Mestres had trained under Grupo Senzala, one of the most influencing capoeira groups and pioneers of Capoeira Contemporânea during the late 1960s and 70s. Paulão and Boneco trained under the guidance of Mestre Camisaand Paulinho under Mestre Gato.

As such, Grupo Capoeira Brasil was inaugurated in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in honor of the recent centennial of the abolishment of slavery in Brazil. Under the supervision and blessing of its “padrinhos”, or godfathers, Mestre Gato, Mestre Peixinho and Mestre Rafael Flores (founders of Grupo Senzala), Mestre Suassuna, Mestre Itapoãn, Mestre Peixinho, and the late Mestre Ezekiel, Grupo Capoeira Brasil arose.

Benção Brasil Cultural Center is home to Capoeira Brasil Los Angeles (CBLA). Benção Brasil is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that provides after school enrichment programs, Capoeira-physical education classes for elementary and high school students, cultural performances, training scholarships, camps, cultural trips, and special workshops. Benção Brasil is also developing a gang intervention program for youth in economically challenged neighborhoods. It is our mission to provide Southern California youth with a creative, physical outlet, an alternative to drugs, gangs, and violence.

Mestre Boneco

Mestre Boneco began training Capoeira at the age of eleven with Grupo Senzala in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1989, after 19 years of dedicated training, he was recognized for his outstanding achievement in the Capoeira community and awarded his black belt by a council of Brazil’s most distinguished masters. Mestre Boneco’s black belt is also recognized by the Brazilian Capoeira Federation. After receiving his black belt, Mestre Boneco, along with Mestres Paulinho Sabia and Paulão, founded Grupo Capoeira Brasil, an organization that would later become one of the largest Capoeira groups in the world.

Mestre Boneco’s 37 years of experience include teaching workshops in the world’s leading universities, presenting seminars and talks at many international fitness and cultural conferences, and the production of over 20 international Capoeira festivals. Today he supervises over 70 graduated instructors with programs in South and North America, Australia, Europe, and Asia. Mestre Boneco also supervises instructors teaching at UCLA, LMU, and Cal State LA as well as Capoeira projects in various Southern California public, private, and charter schools.

Mestre Boneco has been featured on CNN, FOX news, ABC, NBC, KTLA, Telemundo and Univision news shows. He was featured on “Extra Hollywood” and VH1’s “Hollywood’s Hardest Bodies.” In print, Mestre Boneco and his group have graced the pages of Men’s Fitness, SELF, and The Los Angeles Times. And in the entertainment industry, Mestre Boneco has choreographed and trained actors for various motion pictures, national commercials, and stage productions as well as developed his own team of Capoeira specialized stunt men.
